In terms of winter sports, the Vosges were never nearly as popular as the Alps; this was less due to the snow – there was always enough of it – than to the terrain, which was not particularly demanding. For families, on the other hand, less experienced skiers and anyone who simply wanted to experience winter in the great outdoors, the region was ideal.

Just such a situation, with guests enjoying sledging, skating and skiing, is depicted by Louis Tauzin (1845-1914) in this early original winter sports poster used by the Chemins de Fer de l’Est railway company to advertise its services in the Vosges. To demonstrate his skill with light and shadow and to give the poster a certain drama, Tauzin chose a scene in the early sunset.
