A magnificent original poster and a magnificent view of the Aletsch Glacier from a time when the word “graphic designer” was hardly used and advertisers commissioned their posters from fine artists – which is why the picturesque poster dominated (in Switzerland) until the early 1920s.

In the present case, Wilhelm Friedrich Burger, born in Zurich in 1882 – he first completed an apprenticeship as a lithographer before studying in Zurich and Karlsruhe and then working as an illustrator in London, Philadelphia, New York, and Boston between 1903 and 1908 – demonstrates his unerring sense of composition and color as well as his ability to play with light and shadow.

The version printed in 1914 with a sheet size of approximately 90×123 cm is considered the first poster for the Jungfrau Railway completed in 1912 (Jungfraujoch station) and accordingly helped to spread the image of the Swiss mountain world and Swiss tourism around the world. This slightly smaller version was printed in the mid-1920s, possibly to take advantage of the post-World War I economic boom in Europe.
