Original Poster created by Erwin Roth (1886 – 1963) in 1916 at the intersection of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Probably at the behest of his father – a lawyer, who wanted him to learn a “respectable trade” – Roth only enrolled at the Academy of Arts in Munich after completing his apprenticeship as a goldsmith, before winning third prize and 500 Swiss Francs (would be equivalent to around 5500 Francs today) with his design in the poster competition for the 1914 national exhibition.
This poster was commissioned by the Scholl brothers, who ran a stationery and art supplies store in a prime location near the Fraumünster in Zurich (even Winston Churchill was a customer) – hence the elegant still life arrangement. Rare.
