When Sir Arnold Lunn constructed the first slalom race in the history of alpine skiing behind the Hotel Jungfrau in 1922, the Mürren Ski Club had already been in existence for ten years. In 1937 it was followed by ski lift on the Schiltfrat, the first in the Bernese Oberland. The fact that the poster advertises “3 sport railways” is due to the fact that two railways are generously counted, including the funicular from Mürren to the Allmendhubel, Mürren’s small local mountain. Mürren is now known above all for its fantastic view of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau and because the former farming village has been car-free since 1951!

We know next to nothing about the creator of this rare and dynamic poster, Georges Schettler. Born in Odessa in 1915 and died in Zurich in 1966, we are aware of only one other poster by his hand, commissioned by Davos; but he seems to have published a novel in 1954: “Passion and Delusion”.

The version printed for the French-speaking target audience is also available, in comparable condition.
