SKY SOCIETY - Exhibition of original Swissair posters

When Swissair was founded in 1931, it was anything but foreseeable that the Swiss airline would one day serve as a model for other airlines for decades to come. Thanks in no small part to a corporate identity developed early on by Rudolf Bircher and then—above all—consistently implemented by the executive board, Swissair began setting standards in many respects from the early 1950s through the 1970s. Switzerland was accordingly proud of «its» airline, which soon came to play a role that was virtually synonymous with the nation’s identity. The posters on display in the exhibition—all originals, particularly from the 1930s through the 1960s—as well as the brochures, flight schedules, and similar ephemera—show the public the sometimes charming, sometimes progressive ways in which Swissair promoted its services—and, by extension, Switzerland itself—during its heyday.
