Ticino – Gandria

A wonderful original poster by the “father of Ticino posters,” Daniele Buzzi: Just the warmth radiating from the facades of Gandria—situated on the shores of Lake Lugano—bathed in the evening glow…—a village that has somehow managed to remain relatively authentic while still being spared from overtourism.

Buzzi (1890–1974) was originally an engineer, trained in Winterthur, who first worked for Oerlikon-Bührle before joining the Western Switzerland Electricity Company, where he was involved, among other things, in the first Dixence Dam project (which also explains why many of his Ticino posters were printed in French-speaking Switzerland). As an artist, he was entirely self-taught, and his affinity for technology landed him his first commission: In the mid-1920s, the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) commissioned him to design two posters announcing the completion of the electrification of the Gotthard and Simplon lines, respectively —the beginning of a series of about fifty posters that, well into the 1960s, accompanied the initially slow-growing but later rapidly expanding tourism industry in his home canton.
