An extremely rare original poster commissioned by the St. Moritz Tourist Office from Carl Moos in 1930, which—in this case—was intended to attract summer visitors in France rather than in French-speaking Switzerland. At the same time, it is pretty much the last classic (i.e., picturesque or, depending on one’s perspective, traditional) tourism poster for the Engadin resort town that promoted the beauty of the landscape, as magnificent as the view from the northern slopes is of the lakes of St. Moritz, Silvaplana, and Sils, as well as the distinctive Piz de la Margna.
With the appointment of Walter Amstutz as tourism director and his subsequent collaboration with Walter Herdeg, a new, more modern wind began to blow—fully in line with the trend not only in Swiss poster design toward greater restraint, clarity, abstraction, and photography. That said, it was, by its very nature, easier to implement this approach in product or event posters than in tourism posters.
