With this practically vertical extension of the “N” line, Leo Keck (1906–1987) brilliantly illustrates the enormous gradient that the funicular—which opened as early as 1910 (and is still in operation today)— funicular on Thun’s local mountain: Over a distance of 3.5 kilometers from Mülenen (700 m above sea level), the cars climb more than 1,640 meters in elevation—which corresponds to a staggering gradient of just under 70 percent.
With its vibrant Fauvist color scheme and highly abstract design, this poster is undoubtedly one of the most famous Swiss travel posters from the 1930s; it is rare, especially in this condition.
Born in what is now the Czech Republic, Keck worked for two of Switzerland’s leading poster printing companies in the 1930s and 1940s: first as a graphic designer and lithographer at Wolfensberger, and then, beginning in 1937, as the in-house graphic designer for the Fretz brothers.
