In 1946, Switzerland was awarded the hosting rights for the FIFA World Cup—which was not a huge surprise, as there were no other bidders so soon after the war. A very big surprise, however, was the tournament victory of the team from the Federal Republic of Germany. Following the lost war and the hardships that followed, this «Miracle of Bern» had enormous significance for West Germans.

The 1954 finals were the first tournament to be officially referred to as the Football World Cup. Switzerland was eliminated in the quarter-finals after the legendary 5:7 loss against Austria in Lausanne.
