In 1946, Switzerland was awarded the right to host the FIFA World Cup—which was not a major surprise, as there were no other bidders so soon after the war. A very major surprise, however, was the tournament victory of the team from the Federal Republic of Germany. Following the lost war and the hardships that followed, this «Miracle of Bern» had enormous significance for West Germans.

The 1954 finals were the first tournament to be officially called a Football World Cup. Switzerland were eliminated in the quarter-finals after the legendary 5-7 defeat against Austria in Lausanne.
