Original poster by the Aargau native Erwin Roth (1886–1963), located at the intersection of Art Nouveau and Art Deco, who—likely at the behest of his father, a jurist, to first learn «something respectable»—only enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich after completing his goldsmith apprenticeship, before winning third prize and 500 francs (equivalent to around 5,500 francs today) with his design in the poster competition for the 1914 National Exhibition.
The poster was commissioned by the Scholl brothers, who ran a stationery and art supply store near Zurich’s Fraumünster—a prime location (even Winston Churchill was a customer)—and the still-life composition reflects this elegance. Rare.
