The Film | Museum of Decorative Arts, Zurich

In the late 1950s, Josef Müller-Brockmann took another step toward minimalism, which led in 1959 to the design of this groundbreaking original poster, commissioned by the Museum of Decorative Arts in Zurich for its exhibition on film, its nature, and its impact on viewing habits—one of Müller-Brockmann’s two or three most avant-garde and best-known designs.

While he once again focuses on a purely typographic solution and a well-proportioned arrangement of the elements, he succeeds in creating the impression of moving images—and thus a cinematic moment—by superimposing the two main words on top of each other. An icon not only of Swiss graphic design but of graphic design itself, superbly preserved.
