Original Swiss Art Nouveau poster used by the Brunnen-Morschach Railway to advertise itself at the beginning of the last century, shown here with the summer 1910 timetable.
From today’s perspective, it may seem somewhat strange that the god Hermes depicted in the style of the secession (although: apparently he wasn’t good enough, and a woman like Hermes had to be used) dominates the motif in such a way, while the train itself is not at all depicted – this approach was by no means unusual for the time of Symbolism.
The Brunnen-Morschach railway was in operation from 1905 to 1969 and was built primarily to provide better access to the Schwyz resort town of Morschach and the two Belle Epoque hotels Axenstein and Axenfels high above Lake Lucerne.
