Originally built between 1896 and 1900 on the shores of Lake Zurich at General-Guisan-Quai, the Palais Henneberg served as a residence and art gallery for the silk merchant Gustav Henneberg, before the stately building was converted into a Kursaal with a casino following the owner's death in 1918. However, Zwinglian Zurich was not Monte Carlo, and the crises of the 1930s did the rest, leading Migros to use the building for its club school starting in 1947. Demolition work began in 1969 to make way for the new headquarters of IBM Switzerland.
Oscar Zimmermann (1874 – 1966) devoted his works primarily to Zurich cityscapes and buildings – as is also the case in the nearly ten posters he left behind, all of which are now rare specimens.
