A striking original poster depicting the spectacular view of the equally spectacular arch bridge over the Muota Gorge near Schwyz, which lies directly below the valley station of the cable car to the car-free mountain village of Stoos. Opened in 1933, the world’s steepest funicular leads up to a high plateau on the Fronalpstock, where the resort is situated at just over 1,300 meters above sea level.
The designer of the poster is unknown—perhaps Otto Ernst?—who did not sign it, however, because he had a contract with the Trüb printing house in Aarau, while this poster was printed by Orell Füssli in Zurich…? In any case, the breathtaking scene is superbly depicted and further enhanced by the stark contrast between the dark gorge and the glowing peaks.
After more than eight decades of operation, the railway was replaced by the newly built funicular at the end of 2017.
