Shortly after World War II, the Davos Tourist Association used this precisely drawn (and equally precisely printed) depiction of an Apollo butterfly to promote summer excursions and stays in the health resort in the Landwasser Valley, which had hitherto been promoted primarily as a winter destination.
The creators of the design were Walter Kern (1898 – 1966), active as both a businessman and an art critic, and Arnold Bosshard (1898 – 1974), who opened a studio for advertising consulting and design in St. Gallen in 1944 — with Kern having already headed the advertising and sales department of the traditional Zurich printing company Gebr. Fretz in the late 1920s, before serving as director from 1930 to 1941 of the tourist office of... exactly: Davos. As such, he was one of the driving forces behind the exhibition «50 Years of Swiss Posters» by the local art society in 1941. In 1953, he assumed management of the Winterthur book printing company and the publishing house of the magazine «Werk».
