Original Swiss Art Nouveau poster used by the Brunnen-Morschach Railway to advertise itself at the beginning of the last century, shown here with the summer 1910 timetable.
From today's perspective, it may seem a bit strange that the messenger god Hermes, depicted in the style of the Secession, dominates the motif to such an extent while the railway itself is not depicted at all – yet this approach was by no means unusual for the period of Symbolism.
The Brunnen-Morschach railway was in operation from 1905 to 1969 and was built primarily to provide better access to the Schwyz resort town of Morschach and the two Belle Epoque hotels Axenstein and Axenfels high above Lake Lucerne.
