Otto Baumberger’s poster for the Zurich Tourist Office thrives on contrast: On one side, the Old Town, bathed in warm light and rendered in an almost cubist style, with the towering spires of the Grossmünster dominating the scene; on the other, the cool, flat blues and grays of the lake, the Glarus Alps, and the sky. It’s astonishing how contemporary the harmony between the message—big-city flair set against unspoiled nature—and its execution still feels today.

Baumberger, a native of Zurich, is undoubtedly one of Switzerland’s most important poster designers; between 1911 and 1948, he designed some 250 posters that helped shape the evolution from painterly artistic posters to graphic corporate design.
