When the Montreux Oberland Bernois Railway reached Gstaad via Château-d'Oex in 1905, the poor yet charming valley was connected to the rail network—the absolute prerequisite for tourism development. By the winter of 1907/08, one could already speak of a first season, which is why the locals began building hotels before the Gstaad Palace followed in 1913 (which remains the epitome of sophistication to this day)—prompting the very first Gstaad posters as well.
However, with two exceptions, these are not continued until 15 years later. The tourist office does not even commission posters advertising Gstaad as a proper winter sports resort until the early 1930s (compared to the Graubünden hotspots like St. Moritz or Davos, the Saanenland region was, after all, a latecomer) – from Alex Walter Diggelmann, a Bernese Oberlander born in 1902 who had recently established himself in Zurich as a commercial artist; thus, a representative of the new generation who had not experienced much of Art Nouveau and whose fresh approach as well as dynamic motifs were ideal for the up-and-coming winter sports resort.
