Shooting festivals were among the origins of the Swiss poster: It was the local organizers of these quintessentially Swiss traditional events who, as early as the 19th century, selected from among the submitted designs the one that would widely publicize their shooting festival—a social event—as part of competitions. Consequently, it’s easy to imagine that these posters weren’t necessarily part of the avant-garde.
This design by Paul Krawutschke, on the other hand, is actually quite modern: no references to any Swiss battles or oaths of allegiance, no grand metaphors or shooting targets, not even a single morale-boosting lady. Instead, there’s a marksman aiming directly at the viewer. Very effective. The total prize money of 100,000 francs must have been quite impressive as well, especially for a relatively small canton like Thurgau.
