A beautifully colored and extremely rare original poster, designed in 1922 during the Art Deco era, which also documents a distinguished piece of local history: It advertises the upcoming opening of the Cinema Seefeld; although it was already the 22nd movie theater in Zurich (!), it was the first for which a new building was constructed specifically for the purpose, allowing it to be furnished in a manner befitting its status—entirely in keeping with the tastes of the educated middle class it was intended to serve. The fact that the acoustics were abysmal—not least because of the elaborate decor—didn’t matter at the time: after all, only silent films were shown. Today, the building on Seefeldstrasse—which is now a historic landmark—houses the Razzia restaurant.
The poster is signed with the monogram "HL," which suggests it was created by the painter Hans Leemann (1887–1967); although he does not appear to have made a significant mark as an artist, at least three other posters from this period bearing the same signature are known to exist.
