A fabulous original poster that captures the essence of lithography even on a screen: No other printing process can produce colors that remain this vibrant even after 100 years—rich and intense even in the most subtly shaded areas. It’s one of our absolute favorite posters, because even though it’s essentially a painting devoid of any graphic simplification, these colors are simply overwhelming.
The Ticino engineer and artist Daniele Buzzi, as well as—it should be noted—the Lausanne printer Auguste Marsens, really went all out; together, they must have prepared eight stones rather than six. It was an enormous undertaking and, accordingly, expensive—costs that the local tourism organization did not shy away from in order to attract summer visitors to Buzzi’s hometown on the northern shore of Lake Maggiore. And it was essential if the goal was to present the Madonna del Sasso pilgrimage church above Locarno in the best Fauvist light. Clearly, everyone involved put their hearts into this project.
