Exhibition in Singapore, fall 2019

«The key to my architecture»

A pioneer of modernism as an architect, a guaranteed sensation as an urbanist and author, the creator of timeless armchairs as a designer: Le Corbusier - born Charles-Edouard Jeanneret-Gris in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, in 1887 - is a berserker of creative energy, fabulously productive, incredibly creative, idolized and demonized in his lifetime.

He draws strength and inspiration for this tour de force from his art. It is «the key to my architecture», as he repeatedly emphasizes. Around 500 oil paintings - many of which now fetch prices in the millions -, thousands of drawings and collages, hundreds of prints and countless tapestries, sculptures and enamel works bear witness to this. This is where he developed his arsenal of forms, which he then used as an architect, and where he researched the balance of proportions.

Between 1916 - even before his first purist paintings - and 1965, Le Corbusier repeatedly worked on prints, taking up all his central themes, whether still lifes, the «objets à réaction poétique» or the «five points of a new architecture» that established his fame in the 1920s. His graphic work ultimately comprises around 200 sheets, most of them signed and printed by the masters of his time.

Le Corbusier approached these sheets with great care. In his sense of mission, they are always also a means of communication for him. In 1963, for example, he wrote to the lithographer Fernand Mourlot that prints were «à disposition des gens intelligents . . . . . et pauvres (!) qui seraient ravis de payer très bon marché un mural de papier à punaiser sur leurs murs».
