In 1946, Switzerland won the bid to host the World Cup – which was no surprise, as there were no other contenders so soon after the war. A huge surprise, however, was the tournament victory of the team from the Federal Republic of Germany. After the lost war and the following privations, this “Miracle of Bern” had an enormous meaning for the West Germans.
The 1954 finals were the first tournament to be officially called the World Cup. Switzerland was eliminated in the quarterfinals after the legendary 5:7 in Lausanne against Austria.
Price is for both sheets together; the main motif on the left is the Italian version, the program on the right is the French one; sheet size 127.5×90 cm each
