Original Vintage Exhibition Poster by Ernst Scheidegger and Heinz & Christa Waldvogel on the occasion of the first solo exhibition of the British sculptor Henry Moore in Zurich – deliberately designed to be extremely sober, in the knowledge that the sheer presence of the depicted “Reclining Figure”, which Unesco commissioned from him in 1956 for the square in front of its headquarters in Paris, is effective enough.
Moore’s international breakthrough came in 1951 at the latest, when the BBC broadcast a documentary about him – the first in the world to be about a living artist. His expansive sculptures, which for all their abstraction never betrayed their figurativeness, were shown at the first Swiss solo exhibition in Bern a year earlier and were not yet seen by 2,000 visitors.
Since the Moore exhibition in 1976, his “Sheep Piece” has had a permanent place on Zurich’s lakeside promenade.
