Pretty much everyone who visits Switzerland even occasionally is familiar with the Swiss graphic designer Hans Hartmann: It was he who in 1972 designed the Federal Railways’ dynamic logo, featuring two arrows emerging from the Swiss cross.
Ten years earlier, SBB already had commissioned him to design a poster intended to raise public awareness of the achievements of the Cargo division, which had received far less attention up to that point. His bold, technically precise and coolly executed detail of a freight car with the steel wheel serving as an eye-catcher conveys exactly what it is meant to convey: solid, unwavering reliability.
