Original Swiss Art Nouveau poster issued by the Brunnen – Morschach Railway to advertise itself at the beginning of the last century, here with the timetable for the summer half-year 1910.
From today’s perspective, it may seem a little strange that Hermes, the messenger of the gods depicted in secessionist style, dominates the motif in such a way, while the railway itself is not depicted at all; this approach, however, was by no means unusual for the Symbolist period.
The Brunnen – Morschach railway was in operation from 1905 to 1969 and built primarily to improve access from Lake Lucerne to the holiday resort of Morschach in the canton of Schwyz and the two Belle Epoque hotels Axenstein and Axenfels.
