Original Vintage Poster by Ernst Würtenberger based on Ferdinand Hodler’s «Warrior with Halberd» (1898) and «Retreat from Marignano» (1900), created in 1911 on the occasion of the performance of the «folk drama» written by C. F. Wiegand in a specially constructed open-air theater in Morschach – whereby «folk drama» is indeed still appropriate today:

The devastating defeat in 1515 of the Swiss Confederates (12,000 dead!) serving the Duke of Milan by the troops of King Francis I of France did not end Swiss mercenary activity, but it did put an end to the territorial ambitions of the Swiss Confederation, which had previously enjoyed almost nothing but victories. The retreat of the severely decimated army is considered by some to be the origin of Swiss neutrality, which continues to this day (others see the Congress of Vienna 300 years later as the beginning), the nature and implementation of which is still hotly debated.
