In 1947, Johann Conrad Weilenmann, the son of a Swiss pasta manufacturer, takes over the management of the Swiss subsidiary of the German food manufacturer Knorr, which has been badly hit by the shortages of the world war. Part of his efforts to restart the company is the idea of a brand ambassador: a friendly character from the world of fairy tales. In the Ticino (commercial) artist Hans Tomamichel (1899 – 1984), he finds the congenial creator of an effective advertising figure with a plate face and pointed cap, which Tomamichel modeled on a mountain spirit from his home village in the Maggia Valley.
From then on and to this day, even after Knorr was taken over by Unilever, his Knorrli is emblazoned on packet soups, the in 1953 launched national seasoning Aromat, bouillon, mashed potatoes and everything else that Knorr produces in Switzerland. At times, the figure, which was also used in advertisements and – obviously – on posters, achieved a level of recognition of almost 95 percent in Switzerland; an incredible figure.
